Can Cats Eat Walnuts?

Are Walnuts Safe for Cats?

No! Walnuts are not recommended for cats to eat as food or treats

They are not one of the most toxic or dangerous foods for a cat to eat, they still pose a risk to the cat's health. Additionally, they don’t provide much nutritional value, therefore, it’s smart to keep walnuts away.

Cats are carnivores, which means they prefer to get their essential nutrients from animal-based foods such as poultry or fish. Nuts, including walnuts, don’t fit into these categories and can be difficult for a cat’s digestive system.

A singular walnut may not cause any major issues, but it’s best to steer your cat away from walnuts to avoid any unnecessary dietary problems.

Why Should Cats Avoid Walnuts?

High Fat Content

Due to the amount of fat, including plant-based omega-3s, also known as polyunsaturated fats, it can disrupt a cat’s digestive system. This can cause stomach issues, especially if the cat has taken more than a few accidental bites.

Choking Hazard

The size and shape of whole walnuts make it difficult for cats to bite and chew walnuts into smaller pieces. This poses a choking risk, especially for younger cats, who may swallow them whole.

Moldy Walnuts Can Be Dangerous

If walnuts are not stored properly, there is a high risk of mold developing. Some molds that are produced on foods, including walnuts, may be harmful to pets due to the toxins.

Walnuts that are known or suspected to be bad should be thrown away to avoid any consumption, especially by cats.

Flavored Walnuts Are Even Less Suitable

Plain walnuts are not recommended to be consumed by cats, but more importantly, any walnuts that are flavored are a major no.

The additive ingredients of sugars, spices, flavorings, salts, and others pose a higher risk for your furry friend.

What If My Cat Accidentally Eats a Walnut?

Don’t panic if your cat manages to eat a small piece of a walnut. It’s recommended to monitor their behavior for any signs of unusual behavior, digestive problems, or overall concerns.

If you notice any changes or that your cat has eaten a large amount of walnuts, contact your veterinarian or local animal hospital for further guidance.

What Should Cats Eat Instead?

Rather than walnuts, cats are suggested to eat a balanced diet specifically made for cats that meet all their nutritional needs. This goes for treats too!

It’s best to leave the human food out of their diet to avoid complications!
