Where Are Mangoes Grown Globally?

Mangoes are known as the "king of fruits" in many countries, thanks to their rich, tropical flavor, smooth texture, and impressive nutritional benefits.

Globally, this beloved fruit is cultivated in vast quantities, with some countries standing out as major contributors.

Here's a look at the world's top five mango producers and how they shape the global market.

Pakistan  – 1.8 Million Metric Tons 🇵🇰

Pakistan is one of the world's top mango producers, ranking fifth globally with an annual harvest of around 1.8 million metric tons.

Mangoes in Pakistan

Mangoes in Pakistan symbolize pride, a major part of local agriculture, and a growing export commodity.

Locations & Varieties

Mango farming is mainly centered in Punjab, which produces about 70% of the country's mangoes, followed by Sindh (29%) and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (1%).

The country has many famous varieties, including Sindhri, Chaunsa, Anwar Ratol, Langra, and Dussehri—each known for its sweetness, aroma, and rich taste.

Season & Exports

The mango season in Pakistan stretches from mid-May to late September, offering a steady supply for local markets and export shipments.

In 2025, Pakistan aims to export 125,000 tons of mangoes and earn around $100 million in foreign exchange.

Traditional export markets include the Middle East and Europe, while newer destinations like Japan, the US, South Korea, Australia, Turkey, China, and South Africa are also tapped.

Challenges

However, the industry faces serious challenges.

Climate change, water shortages, and limited access to modern farming tools have impacted production.

In recent years, output has dropped by as much as 60%, and forecasts for 2025 suggest a potential 20% decline, bringing production closer to 1.4 million tons.

Despite the hurdles, Pakistan remains one of the most important names in the global mango trade.

Its mangoes are prized for their taste, texture, and quality, making them a favorite across international markets.

Indonesia  – 4 Million Metric Tons 🇮🇩

Indonesia sits near the top of the world's mango league, producing about 4 million metric tons annually and forecast to top 2.5 million tons again in 2025.

Locations & Varieties

Mango trees flourish in the country's warm, humid climate, especially in East Java (the biggest producer), South Sulawesi, and West Nusa Tenggara.

Farmers grow a wide mix of varieties—more than a dozen in commercial volumes. Local favorites include Arumanis (also called "Harumanis"), Manalagi, Golek, and Gedong.

Thanks to their long shelf life, sweet aroma, and low fiber, Arumanis and Gedong lead Indonesia's export shipments.

Cuisine

Most Indonesian mangoes are eaten at home, sliced fresh or turned into traditional pickles, sambal relishes, and desserts.

The fruit's sweet-tart bite pairs well with spicy and tangy dishes, making it a staple in local cooking.

Exports

Although production is high, less than 1 percent of the crop is exported.

Neighboring countries buy the bulk of what is shipped, leaving plenty of untapped potential for wider global sales.

Improving cold-chain logistics and quality grading could open larger markets in the years ahead.

With rich varietal diversity, strong domestic demand, and clear export headroom, Indonesia's mango industry is well placed to keep growing, both on the farm and abroad.

Thailand  – 3 Million Metric Tons 🇹🇭

Thailand is one of the top mango producers in the world, with production expected to reach over 3 million metric tons by 2025.

Mangoes are the country's largest fruit crop, and their importance goes beyond farming—they are a major part of Thai food, culture, and exports.

Seasons & Varieties

The mango harvest usually runs from February to July, during the country's hottest and driest months.

With more than 60 varieties grown, Thailand offers various flavors and textures.

Two of the most popular types are Nam Dok Mai and Mahachanok—both known for their sweet taste, low fiber, and beautiful golden color.

Keo Savoy is another favorite, especially for export markets.

Cuisine

Thai mangoes are enjoyed fresh, but they also shine in local dishes.

The world-famous mango sticky rice is a must-try dessert that combines ripe mangoes with sweet coconut milk and sticky rice.

Mangoes are also used in salads, smoothies, and sauces, showing how versatile this fruit is.

Exports

Thailand's mango industry continues to grow, partly thanks to government support for farmers and exporters.

These programs help improve farming methods and open up new markets, making Thailand a strong player in the global mango trade.

With their rich flavor, high quality, and cultural value, Thai mangoes are loved across Southeast Asia and beyond.

China   – 5 Million Metric Tons 🇨🇳

China is the world's second-largest mango producer, with an expected harvest of around 5 million metric tons in 2025.

Locations

Mangoes grow especially well in the warm southern provinces like Guangxi, Guangdong, Hainan, Yunnan, and Sichuan, where the climate supports strong production.

One of the biggest mango-producing areas is Baise City in Guangxi.

The city has about 913 square kilometers of mango farms and produced 1.25 million tons in 2023, nearly 28% of all mangoes grown in China.

Baise has a full system for growing, processing, and transporting mangoes. Its factories can handle up to 300,000 tons, and the industry is worth over 1.5 billion yuan (around $220 million).

Exports

Mango exports from China are also rising fast. In the first 10 months of 2024, China shipped out almost 88,000 metric tons of mangoes, worth $108 million, twice as much as the year before.

Most of these went to Vietnam (54.8%), Russia (14.5%), and Hong Kong (12.8%), but others were sent to Singapore, Canada, and Poland as well.

Growth

China has been growing mangoes for over a thousand years, but large-scale commercial farming only started in the 1980s.

Today, areas like Hainan province produce about 900,000 tons every year.

The total value of the mango industry in Hainan is over 16 billion yuan.

In 2024, local mango prices increased in China due to limited supply. Wholesale prices reached around 11.5 yuan per kilogram (about $1.58/kg).

Cuisine

Chinese mangoes are eaten fresh and used in desserts, drinks, sauces, and even health products. With both local and global demand growing, China continues to expand its role in the world mango market.

India  – 26 Million Metric Tons 🇮🇳

India is the world's largest mango producer, responsible for around 45% of the global supply.

Over 26 million metric tons are expected in 2025.

India Mango

Mangoes are deeply rooted in Indian life.

From family meals to festivals, mangoes are a key part of the country's culture, economy, and agriculture.

Locations

The country's tropical climate and rich soil make it ideal for mango farming.

Major producing states include Uttar Pradesh (the top contributor), Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Bihar, and Maharashtra.

These regions support various mangoes, catering to local demand and international trade.

Varieties

India is home to over 1,000 mango varieties, some of the most famous being Alphonso, Kesar, Dasheri, Banganapalli, and Langra.

Each has its own unique flavor, texture, and fan base. Alphonso, for example, is known for its rich sweetness and is often considered one of the best-tasting mangoes in the world.

Exports

While most mangoes are consumed within the country, exports are growing.

Indian mangoes are shipped to the United States, the United Kingdom, and the United Arab Emirates, among other places.

Recent improvements in meeting export standards—such as through the irradiation process—have helped boost overseas sales.

Cuisine

Whether eaten fresh, blended into lassi, pickled, or turned into chutney, mangoes are a treasured part of Indian food and identity.

As demand rises at home and abroad, India remains at the heart of the global mango story.

Mangoes: A Global Fruit with Local Flair

While India leads the world significantly, each of the five countries brings its flair to mango production.

With distinct climates, resources, and cultural influences, mangoes' diversity reflects the unique characteristics of their countries of origin.

Whether fresh, dried, or as part of a dish, mangoes capture hearts and taste buds worldwide.
